Case Study

Under-Stairs Cloakroom & Saniflo Installation

A former under-stairs cupboard transformed into a practical ground-floor cloakroom, using a pumped waste system and carefully concealed fittings to maximise the limited space.

The Brief

The client wanted to convert an existing cupboard beneath the stairs into a convenient ground-floor cloakroom.

The space had no existing plumbing and was not positioned close enough to a suitable gravity drain for a conventional WC installation. Biggs Heat Technologies was therefore asked to develop a practical solution that would provide a toilet and handwashing facilities without compromising the limited room available.

The complete project included new water services, waste removal, sanitaryware installation, electrical requirements, tiling and final handover.

The Challenge

The principal challenge was the absence of an accessible soil pipe or suitable gravity drainage connection near the proposed cloakroom.

In addition, the sloping underside of the staircase and the restricted floor area meant that every part of the installation had to be carefully positioned. A conventional exposed cistern would have reduced the usable space and made the room feel considerably more confined.

The project also required electrical supplies for the pumped waste unit, towel rail, extractor fan and lighting, all of which needed to be incorporated neatly into the conversion.

Our Solution

Biggs Heat Technologies designed a compact cloakroom layout that made effective use of both the under-stairs area and the adjoining cupboard space.

The works included:

By locating the cistern within the dividing wall, we avoided using valuable space inside the cloakroom while retaining a clean, uncluttered appearance.

The Result

The former cupboard has been successfully converted into a practical and attractive ground-floor cloakroom.

The pumped waste system overcame the lack of nearby gravity drainage, while the concealed cistern and back-to-wall WC kept the sanitaryware footprint to a minimum. Using part of the adjoining cupboard wall for the cistern allowed the cloakroom itself to remain as spacious and comfortable as possible.

The finished installation provides the convenience the client required, with new plumbing, ventilation, heating, lighting and tiled finishes brought together within one carefully managed project.
