The Brief
The client was building a private self-build home and required a complete plumbing, heating and renewable energy package that could support the property’s high-efficiency specification.
The house was built from ICF to passive house standard, so the heating and hot water system needed to be carefully designed around low heat demand, efficient performance and long-term reliability.
Biggs Heat Technologies were brought in to support the project from the design stage, through specification and installation, before completing commissioning and handover.
The Challenge
This was a complex new-build project running across four floors, with multiple systems needing to work together as one efficient installation.
The scope included underfloor heating, domestic hot and cold-water supplies, drainage, bathrooms, cloakroom, kitchen plumbing, plant room installation, an unvented hot water cylinder, water softener and air source heat pump.
Because of the high efficiency of the building, the system also needed to operate at low temperatures while still providing reliable heating and hot water throughout the property.
Our Solution
Biggs Heat Technologies delivered a full plumbing, heating and renewable energy package for the property.
The works included:
- Installation of 2.5km of underfloor heating across four floors
- First fix of all domestic hot and cold-water supplies to sanitary outlets
- Installation of all drainage
- Installation of a Cool Energy 12kW air source heat pump
- Plant room installation
- Unvented hot water cylinder
- Water softener
- Four bathrooms and a cloakroom
- Plumbing works in conjunction with the kitchen installation
- Commissioning works and final handover
The Result
The finished system provides heating and hot water through the air source heat pump, with no additional backup heating required.
Due to the efficiency of the building, the client only needs around 30°C into the underfloor heating, helping to keep the system running efficiently and energy costs low.
The property also benefits from Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery, fitted by another contractor, providing continual air change with minimal heat loss. Combined with the air source heat pump and low-temperature underfloor heating, this gives the home an efficient, joined-up heating and ventilation setup.
